Fighting for student rights in Quebec

Tens of thousands of students have walked out of their classes in the past few weeks and declared strike due to rising tuition fees.

On Wednesday, March 7, 2012, police used tear gas at the protesting students in downtown Montreal. Four people were injured during that commotion. The injuries reported were minor although two people were taken to hospital to be treated for trauma. Also, several students were arrested, some tackled by police and tied plastic ties around their wrists before hauling them away.

An interview with ReFrame Festival Director Krista English

The ReFrame Peterborough International Film Festival will again be happening in our community this weekend. For those not in the know, ReFrame is a selection of socially conscious films, chosen from around the world by a volounteer collective. Venues for the films this year include Markethall, Showplace and The Venue. Student priced ($12) festival passes are available now from the TCSA office, or downtown at GreenUp and Titles bookstore. ReFrame Again

Since the end of last year’s reFrame Film Festival, this year’s festival was beginning to be planned. This cycle has been going on for 8 years in order to bring fascinating films from across the world, country and community to Peterborough. There are “120 committed local sponsors, 110 dedicated volunteers, a dozen local artists exhibiting in a dozen businesses”, according to the program. The films are screened at various locales downtown and on campus, student passes for the weekend are $15 and it is happening this weekend. ReFrame has recently “also received charitable status and found a new home with Green-Up.”
