Athletics, anyone?

The men’s rugby team started strongly in their home opener Saturday against highly ranked Mohawk College. However, the  lack of finish and handling errors gave their opponents too many opportunities to score and the experienced Mohawk side pulled away to record a 45-10 victory. Trent tries were scored by co-captains, Graham Abbott and Kevin MacLean. Kevin MacLean stated that he was pleased with the team’s effort especially with support that players gave each other right down to the end. They are treating the game as a learning experience which did much to advance the cause of men’s rugby at Trent. Their game next Saturday at Fleming should show the result of the work they are putting in at practices.

Both Trent soccer teams were busy this past weekend, hosting Queen’s on Saturday and Royal Military College on Sunday. The women lost Saturday 4-0 in a game in which their strong team play might have been rewarded with a better result. On Sunday they dominated play at times and were defeated by a penalty goal scored by RMC’s Laura Gray in the 84th minute. Just 10 minutes earlier Trent’s Erin Persi had made an excellent save on a penalty shot from just outside the 18 foot box.

The men suffered a tough loss against Queen’s who scored in injury time to squeak out a 1-0 win. On Sunday they dominated RMC winning 3-1 on goals by Eli Adansii, Devon Coutu and Dan Ratislav. Dylan Kirk replied for RMC.

Both teams travel to Ryerson on Wednesday.
