Men
The men's volleyball team went in to Saturday's game against Georgian College knowing that they had to start winning matches soon in order to get to the league playoffs. The Grizzlies came in tied in the standings with Trent and on the day competed more fiercely to take the match in three games 25-21 25-18 and 25-20. With Mike Rodin now unable to continue as a key point-getting spiker because of his shoulder injury, Coach Rusty Haines has moved him to centre where he made several key blocks in his new position. The team will be working hard on improving their team defence and consistency with their serves as they get ready for their next home game Saturday February 5.
Women
The women's volleyball team maintained their winning streak Saturday afternoon by defeating the Georgian College Grizzlies in a four game set. The match appeared at first that it was going to be a walk, with 25-7 and 25-17 scores in the first two games. But the Grizzlies rallied to take the third game 25-16 and pushed the Excalibar to the limit before they were closed out in the exciting final game 27-25. The team has been working hard on their defensive game, using the experience gained on their Quebec tour over the break as a measure of how far they need to extend themselves in order to compete against the top teams in the country. Coach Pete Carter commented that he was pleased with the strong team defence displayed throughout the match and commended Sam Belsey for her offensive play at centre. Next home game will be Saturday February 5.
