Anti-Racism Commissioner

Saman Jamil

My name is Saman Jamil and I am running for the position of Anti-Racism Commissioner. I am a third year student who is doing a joint major in International Political Economy and Business Administration. The reason I am running for this position is that I truly believe in ethno-racial equality. To me, this means that every individual has a right to live and enjoy their life without being harassed on grounds of their race, color and religion. Being an international student from a third world country, I believe I understand the issues and problems faced by many students of different races and ethnicities. Thus, it will be my job to raise awareness regarding some of these problems and take action against these immoral activities on campus and in the Peterborough community, so that Trent and Peterborough can become safer and friendlier places for all students. So please give me an opportunity to counter some of these misconceptions about different races and to help each individual experience the freedom they deserve!

Gender Issues Commissioner

Brea Hutchinson

Hello everyone! My name is Brea and I am running for Gender Issues Commissioner... again. Last year, I filled this position on the TCSA Board and I think my presence was known. My approach in the past was to find issues of concern for students and create solutions. These problems can be large or small, but the point of this Board is to make Trent better for all of us. I would like to hope that in my past year,  with help from the other members of the Board and myself, made Trent a better place. If I am re-elected to this position, I will continue with this trend and bring a voice that is not currently heard. In the past year, I helped organize events, talks and campaigns for more inclusive and equitable policies at Trent. This will be my goal for the upcoming year.

To make this happen, I need your support to be elected to the Board. I ask for your support so I, with the remainder of the Board, will make Trent a safer, more equitable place.

Queer Issues Commissioner

Thomas Young

Well I guess I should begin with introducing myself. My name is Thomas but my friends call me Tom. You might recognize me from any number of English classes I have taken or from volunteering as an executive with Best Buddies for the past year. I have always been known to be stubborn but I myself see that as a good quality because I do not back down when I think I am in the right. If I am voted in for TCSA Queer Commissioner I will aim to build on what has been done before me; mainly creating a positive atmosphere for Trent students who are Queer. One way I would like to do this is by creating a space on campus where Queer students can gather and socialize. This could allow an area for first and upper year students to go and feel comfortable with their sexuality without feeling pressured. I would also like to make sure that the Queer students are being heard by the TCSA and vice versa. By providing office hours I will ensure that there is an open space of communication between the TCSA and the Queer community on campus.

Ethical Standards Commissioner

Montana Meyer

My name is Montana Meyer and I am a fourth year Trent Student majoring in both History and French. I was born and raised in Switzerland but have been studying in Canada for six years. Having had the opportunity to study abroad in France during my third year of my undergraduate, and backpacking through Thailand for a month, has given me the chance to learn about and appreciate many different cultures. By being exposed to many different cultures and cultural traditions I realize that we need to work together for the betterment of society as a whole. If given the opportunity to be your Ethical Standards Commissioner, I will ensure that the TCSA and Trent University will follow fair and ethical standards when purchasing goods. This would include non-sweatshop clothing, fair-trade certified products, and locally grown fruits and vegetables. As your Ethical Standards Commissioner, I will also support and build on Trent’s Food Bank for students by ensuring that students know about their options and use the resources to their fullest. I want to ensure that not only my ethical concerns are heard but also those of the student body. To make this plausible I will keep regular office hours and follow up on student inquiries. I am excited and look forward to working with you as your Ethical Standards Commissioner.

First Year Off Residence Commissioner

Saskia Griffith

My name is Saskia Griffith and I am a forensic science student in my first year at Trent. I transferred here from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, but I am originally from Antigua. The position of First Year Off-Campus Commissioner will allow me to address issues that prevent off-campus students like myself from participating in various school events. The most important step towards achieving this goal is to increase awareness of these events. I plan to act as a channel through which information may be passed from the on-campus groups to the off-campus students and vice versa. I will also work toward forming tighter bonds between off-campus students and their colleges by keeping them up to date with college events and encouraging participation.

It is an honour to be nominated for this position on the board of TCSA and I am excited to hear from my fellow first year off-campus students.
