If you were around OC (or the LEC Pit) this week you might have heard whimsical siren songs reminiscent of the 2001 film Legally Blonde. No, it wasn’t anyone trying to lead you astray on your journey to class, it was the Anne Shirley Theatre Company holding their 11th Annual Callback Auditions for this year’s production of Legally Blonde: The Musical.
Group President Wyatt Short told Arthur that of the 60 students who auditioned 48 were chosen to participate in the callbacks. Short referred to these folks as “the cream of the crop.” And cream of the crop they were; even the vocal exercises I witnessed sounded beautiful.
The people behind the show can be described as the “cream of the crop” as well. The musical is being directed by Jessica Lynch, who also directed Xanadu last year and co-directed The Wedding Singer with Kevin Ross in the 2010-2011. Brian McDonald, past president of the Peterborough Theatre Guild, is acting as the vocal director. The list of talent goes on.
Despite the event’s competitive nature, everyone in attendance was chipper and energetic. Wyatt Short proclaimed that “the most important thing [about the auditions] is to have fun.” It seemed as though everyone was doing an excellent job keeping this in mind during the auditions.
Legally Blonde: The Musical will be performed on March 16, 17, 22, and 23, 2013. If the callback auditions were any indication of the final product The Anne Shirley Theatre Company will be sure to impress come March.
