Maryam Monsef is a Canadian politician involved in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. A refugee from Iran and former citizen of Afghanistan, Monsef attended both Peterborough Collegiate and Vocational School and Trent University. She ran for Mayor of Peterborough against former mayor and incumbent Daryl Bennett in 2014, coming in a close second place out of six candidates. She then ran for the Peterborough-Kawartha candidacy of the Liberal Party of Canada. In the 2015 Canadian federal election, Monsef was elected a Member of Parliament under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. MP Monsef was previously the Minister of Democratic Institutions and President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada until January 10, 2017. She then became Minister for Women and Gender Equity (previously “Minister for the Status of Women”) on January 10, 2017, and Minister of International Development on March 1, 2019. As such, MP Monsef is the incumbent and Liberal candidate for the 2019 Canadian federal election for the riding of Peterborough-Kawartha.
