What do you think of when you hear the term “local music”?
Acoustic guitars? Hand drums? Open mics? Cover songs?
Well, let me tell you, Peterborough does actually have all those things in our vibrant music scene, but also so much more!
Peterborough is a hotbed for live music creators, makers, shakers, and listeners. And you know what? These musicians are seriously talented.
I know, I know—you’re probably thinking that if the music is any good, you’ll be able to find it on iTunes, and listen to it on your iPod through your top-of-the-line earbuds while sitting alone in your bedroom.
Seriously, turn that shit off and jump into the real world.
There are hundreds of real people making real music on real instruments in the real world just down the street from you. Punk. Rock. Folk. Dance. Reggae. Funk. Country. Blues. Metal. Rap. Young. Old. Amateurs. Pros. And it all happens right here in Peterborough.
So what has this got to do with Trent Radio? Well, my name is Jill Staveley, and my job at Trent Radio is, among other things, to get as much local music on the radio as possible so the whole world can hear it.
Trent Radio has a dedicated archive for Local Content. We are partnered with www.RadioFreePeterborough.ca (a 24/7 stream of Peterborough’s music), and we support local musicians in production projects and promoting the events. This year, we are running two exciting projects involving local musicians.
The first project is the Trent Radio Kitchen Sessions, a monthly live music programme at Trent Radio House (715 George Street North, broadcasting on 92.7 FM).
For each session, we invite a group of local musicians to come play their original works in a “songwriter in the round” type performance setting.
So, if you are still too scared to travel through the dark and scary streets of Peterborough to come check out all the amazing live music that I promise exists, here is your chance to check out Peterborough’s incredibly talented Local Music scene from the comfort of your own bedroom! Tune into us through your top-of-the-line earbuds on Trent Radio, 92.7 CFFF FM, or stream us from www.trentradio.ca.
The next Kitchen Session is Friday November 15 at 3pm, and will feature Kelly Pineault, Graeme Kennedy, Jos. Fortin, and Susan Newman. I’ll tell you about that other project some other time.
