On the evening of December 6th, the Kinsmen Club of Peterborough bore the cold to celebrate their 50th annual Santa Claus parade downtown.

The theme for this year’s event was their anniversary with “50’s on the 50th.”

Dozens of Peterborough organizations and businesses marched through George Street sporting Christmas themed outfits.

“It is so cold, but we just have to do it with the kids every year,” said Peterborough mom Judy Glen. “I have gone to at least half of them since I was young and you never really get tired of seeing Santa and the reindeer at the end.”

Glen came out to the event with her husband and three kids to watch the arrival of Santa Claus.

It wasn’t just Saint Nick who made an appearance at the event, The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll Elvis Presley (or at least someone who looked a lot like him) performed for the crowd on a stage sponsored by MPP Dave Smith.

Publicly known as The King Today, Patrick Balleux has been making the rounds recently attending events in full Elvis gear with Smith.

For Glen, it was the cherry on top of the perfect night.

“It’s funny, Elvis just passed through at the beginning, and I had told my husband this morning that this 50’s theme better come with an Elvis,” she said. “It was a joke but I was very happy, I’m a huge fan of his.”

A wide variety of other community members were present at the event.

Boston Pizza’s mascot Lionel was dancing through the street to some Christmas tunes walking side by side with a company vehicle. Trent University's Pom Team marched through the street dressed for the cold weather, and an impressive and shiny float from real estate franchise Century 21.

It was hard not to spot one of many appearances by The Grinch as well. While one of them drove a car through the parade, many stood upon floats emoting to the kids.

With the celebration revolving around the half-century milestone, you would expect the number 50 to be showcased throughout the night, but in reality, a different number stole the spotlight.

The viral meme (that nobody fully understands) of the numbers “six, seven” was featured heavily throughout the night. Every other kid on the floats would do the associated hand motion (alternating your hands up and down) while yelling “six, seven.”

Don’t worry if you don’t understand, you’re not alone.

Prince of Wales Public School student Neb Mills enjoyed the night.

“I’ve been laughing all night,” said Mills. “My friends keep doing the six, seven and I even saw The Grinch do it!”

It wasn’t just the popular theme that kept Mills happy throughout the night.

“I also saw some horses they were riding through and they were so huge, I want to ride on one of them,” he told Arthur.

Many animals were present throughout the night outside of the horses. There were lots of curious dogs braving the long walk, as well as a pair of llamas that seemed to be nice and warm.

To end the parade, Rudolph led Santa’s sleigh with the other famous reindeer to allow Father Christmas and Mrs. Claus to wish all a good night.
