Peterborough Petes teammates and Canadian World Junior Gold Medalists, Brennan Othmann and Owen Beck were presented with certificates of recognition on Monday, January 23rd during a meeting of the General Committee.
“On behalf of myself and Peterborough city council, it is indeed an honour to recognize both of you and your remarkable accomplishments at the World Junior Hockey Tournament,” Mayor Leal said.
He continued, mentioning that the Montreal Canadiens, the team Beck, 18, was drafted by in round two of the 2022 NHL draft was “pretty close to his heart.”
Leal also wished them a long run into the playoffs this year, mentioning that it would be great to have the Memorial Cup come back to Peterborough for the first time since 1979, before joking that “You’re on the better side of history” than the Toronto Maple Leafs and their fans.
The Canadian team won gold after winning six games out of their seven for the entire tournament, dropping only their first game to Czechia by a score of 5-2. In the Gold medal game, Canada redeemed themselves against the Czech team, winning 3-2 in overtime.
Beck was called up to Team Canada as a replacement for Colton Dach who was injured in a game against Sweden on New Year's Eve. He was traded to the Petes from the Mississauga Steelheads on January 7th of this year. So far, he has appeared in six games for Peterborough, compiling three points in the span. Prior to joining the Petes, he had scored seventeen goals and twenty-three assists through thirty games.
Othmann, 20, a left-winger from Pickering who was drafted sixteenth overall in the 2021 NHL draft by the New York Rangers played in all seven games of the IIHF World Junior Tournament, racking up two goals and four assists over that span.
He spent the first part of the 2022/23 OHL season playing for the Flint Firebirds before joining the Peterborough Petes when he was traded for Artem Guryev and three draft picks in November. So far this season, Othmann has forty-one points through thirty-two games played.
So far in the 2022/23 season, the Petes have a record of 23-17-1, good for second in the East Division of the OHL and eighth out of twenty teams in the league overall.
