Couzyn van Heuvlen’s traveling exhibition CAMP has opened at the Art Gallery of Peterborough (AGP) and will be exhibited until January 4th, 2026. These larger-than-life sculptural works combine traditional imagery with contemporary materials as a symbol of Inuit resilience and adaptability.

The show features five sculptural works that immediately dwarf their viewers upon entering the gallery. Each are depictions of communal activities revolving around the practice of northern communities setting up camp in warmer months and the corresponding celebration that takes place.

van Heuvlen’s exploration of materials is what I can only really describe as something I really want to sink my teeth into, both metaphorically and literally. If you are curious to know exactly what I mean… you’ll have to go there to find out.

The attention to detail in these works exists on all sides, really bringing them to life in the space as objects whose existence extends far beyond the display they find themselves in.

In particular, “Scraping Sealskin” (2023), lays on a giant white, wedge shaped plinth. Hidden beneath the fleshy-wool which stands out at first glance is a fully tufted seal skin similar to that which we see stretched from floor to ceiling in “Stretching Sealskin” (2023).

The completeness of these works, even in aspects hidden from direct sight, transform these beyond their state of manufactured art object to something much more alive. Equally as compelling is the tension in the display of “Stretching Sealskin” between the tufted rug, the rope securing it to the frame, the frame itself, and the straps that pull it towards the wall. This tension makes the scale of the work feel even larger than it is. It forces us to consider its size and its potential to move if it were not held so tightly in its place.

Surrounded by warm orange walls, radiating with the joy of community, CAMP comes to life within the walls of the AGP. The gallery transports you to a space of softness, with juvenile influences to its appearance and scale, you can feel the celebration in the atmosphere. van Heuvlen manages to transport his viewers into the depths of his own experiences, and frankly, it’s cool as fuck.

Also on exhibition until January 4th is Stalagmites by Peter Kohut and Taking Care, a collection of works from the Art Gallery of Peterborough’s permanent collection.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

"Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system."
