Helen Cameron Wallis (March 20, 1932 - February 29, 2024), was born in Ottawa, raised a family and enjoyed a varied career in Toronto, after which she settled happily on the bank of her beloved Otonabee River, in Peterborough.

An enthusiastic debater, writer and academic, Helen enrolled at Trent University in her sixties, challenging professors and providing an exemplary example to students generations her junior, while earning a degree in Cultural Studies. Helen, in addition to participating in Senate and on many committees, held the position of Senior Don of Lady Eaton College and was President of the Julian Blackburn Part-Time Students’ Association (JBCSA) into her eighties. Her love of correspondence survived well into the digital age. A gifted and thoughtful raconteur, knowing her was an education in itself.

Helen was predeceased by her father Stan “SG” Cameron (Principal, Broadview Public School) and mother Lillias (Ross) Cameron (Sales, J.L. Orme & Sons) of Ottawa, her sister Jean Seasons, husband Colin “Bud” Wallis and kindred spirit Derrick McIntosh.

Helen is deeply missed by her daughter Laura Kate Wallis (Patrick Granleese) and son Scott Wallis (Maggie Berg). She is survived by granddaughters Emma Granleese Wallis and Rebecca Barrett-Wallis (Nigel Sexsmith), much loved nephew Mark Seasons, and lifelong friends Ella Lefranc and Margret Verkaik.

There are many individuals to thank for their kindness and support over the last few years. The love and care of Personal Support Workers (PSWs) Ruby and Lori provided more comfort and joy than can be measured. Along with the wonderful nurses at Peterborough Regional Health Centre (Bonnie RN, Julie RN, Carrie NP and others) are Dr. Laura MacMillan-Jones and Jane Mark (Patient Relations Consultant-PRHC Medical Assistance in Dying Coordinator), both of whose compassion and attentiveness went far above and beyond any expectations, altering the quality of Helen’s life and death immeasurably.

Helen chose to die with dignity, as she had lived these 92 years, on leap day; February 29th.

Expressions of remembrance can be made as donations to Dying with Dignity Canada.

Please also share memories of Helen’s life here, on this memorial webpage.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

"Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system."
